Alum Chávez-Moreno to receive dissertation honor from National Association of Bilingual Education

UW-Madison alumna Laura Chávez-Moreno is receiving an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Association of Bilingual Education.

This award recognizes Chávez-Moreno’s dissertation, “A Critical Race Ethnography Examining Dual-language Education in the New Latinx Diaspora: Reinforcing and Resisting Bilingual Education’s Roots.”

Chávez-Moreno earned her Ph.D. from the School of Education’s No. 1-ranked Department of Curriculum and Instruction this past summer. 

Her dissertation is a critical race ethnography of a secondary dual-language (DL) program that contributes four findings which discuss DL’s potential — but reveal that, in practice, DL programs preserved the value of white racial identity and don't holistically address equity issues. 

Chávez-Moreno is currently a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

Her next research project will explore and support the critical racial literacy practices of teachers of bi/multilingual students.
