Alum Thorson selected by Knowles Teacher Initiative as a 2019 Teaching Fellow

UW-Madison alumna Rachel Thorson was recently selected by the Knowles Teacher Initiative as a member of its 2019 cohort of Teaching Fellows.

Thorson earned a master of science in curriculum and instruction from the School of Education in 2018.

The Knowles Teacher Initiative awards Teaching Fellowships to approximately 35 early-career high school math and science teachers every year. This five-year program is built to support teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom. 

Teachers like Thorson are chosen for their commitment to collaborative, innovative leadership, and improving education for all students. Thorson tells the Initiative, "I chose teaching because I had teachers that helped me out and am doing my best to pay it forward." 

With this fellowship, Thorson, who now teaches chemistry at Ripon (Wisconsin) High School, will have access to grants for expenses associated with purchasing classroom materials, engaging in professional development, and spearheading leadership activities that have an impact beyond her own classrooms.  

Fellows also receive access to stipends, mentoring and coaching from experienced teachers and teacher educators, and membership in a nationwide community of more than 400 teachers who are committed to improving education.
