WACTE recognizes UW-Madison alums Yang, Boyle and Rasmussen

The Wisconsin Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (WACTE) presented awards to 59 outstanding educators from across Wisconsin in April, including three people who graduated from UW-Madison’s School of Education.

Radeen YangRadeen Yang, an alumna of the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, received an Early Career Educator Award. Yang earned her master’s degree in special education from UW-Madison in 2015 and today is a special education teacher at West Middleton Elementary, which is part of the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.

The Early Career Educator Award is presented to an outstanding educator who is within the first three years of her/his professional career

“Radeen Yang is an exceptional special education teacher,” writes West Middleton Elementary Principal Katrina Krych in nominating Yang for the award. “She is a fierce advocate for the students she works with and is engaging our school community in work around the inclusion of students with disabilities. She has immersed herself in equity work at a district and school level and is a leader on our school-wide equity team. Radeen works tirelessly to find innovative ways to tap into her students' learning potential. She puts her heart and soul into everything she does.”

In addition, Ellen Boyle and Tonya Rasmussen received a Pre-Service Educator Award, which is presented to an outstanding educator who has demonstrated a sustained pattern of mentoring pre-service educators for at least five years.

Ellen Boyle and Tonya RasmussenBoyle and Rasmussen co-teach a linguistically diverse population at Madison’s Franklin Elementary. Boyle earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from UW-Madison in 2004. Rasmussen earned her master’s degree from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 2007.

“They are not only a great mentors in the classroom but also in the school and community,” the nomination for Boyle and Rasmussen explains. “They lead Parent Engagement Groups for our ESL families, playing a large role in the positive school environment. … They both go the extra mile for their students, coworkers, and student teachers.”

WACTE is a professional organization composed of Wisconsin institutions that prepare students for initial teacher licensure. These teacher preparation programs offer diversity in size, focus and delivery, but are all designed to prepare quality teachers for Wisconsin’s schools. WACTE is an affiliate of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).

The event was held last month at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.
