UW-Madison’s Ladson-Billings takes over as president of National Academy of Education

UW-Madison’s Gloria Ladson-Billings became the new president of the National Academy of Education (NAEd) during the group’s fall research retreat in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Nov. 10.

“I look forward to the opportunity to lead what is the premier assemblage of education scholars in the world,” Ladson-Billings says in an NAEd news release. “In a time when our nation and world are facing critical challenges on so many issues, I am excited about the possibilities for bringing insights from education research and practice to bear on real world problems.”

Ladson-Billings, one of the nation’s preeminent researchers on educating diverse students, is the School of Education's Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education. She was elected to her post by her peer NAEd members in December 2016 and is now serving a four-year term as president.

Ladson-Billings is perhaps best known for her book, “The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children,” which was first published in 1994 and continues to be used in teacher education programs around the country. Ladson-Billings’ groundbreaking work on culturally relevant pedagogy and critical race theory centers on examining the practices of teachers who are successful with African American students.

Education Week’s Inside School Research blog posted a Q&A with Ladson-Billings on the same day she took over as NAEd president.

Ladson-Billings, who previously led the 25,000-member American Educational Research Association (AERA) as president from 2005-06, tells Education Week that the 300-member National Academy of Education has provided her with opportunities for deeper mentorship of young doctoral and post-doctoral researchers.

She also tells Education Week that she has a “vision of creating more synergy with other Academies —Science, Engineering — because the one thing they all have in common with us is education. You don't get to be a doctor without education; you don't get to be an engineer without education.”

Ladson-Billings is a professor with the departments of Curriculum and InstructionEducational Policy Studies, and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. She succeeds Michael Feuer, dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University.

The National Academy of Education supports research for the advancement of education policy and practice in the United States. Its members are a very select group of education experts from all over the world. Ladson-Billings was first elected to the academy 10 years ago.
