Amy Noelle Parks: Candidate Talk for the Gulbrandsen Chair in Early Childhood Education

Amy Noelle Parks, a candidate for the Gulbrandsen Chair in Early Childhood Education, will be delivering a presentation titled "Centering Young Children's Perspectives in Classroom Research."

The candidate talk will be on Monday, Oct. 9 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in room 259 of the Educational Sciences building.

Parks
Parks is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University and the author of "Exploring Mathematics Through Play in Early Childhood Classrooms." Parks works in the fields of early childhood and mathematics education, and her research is concerned with equity issues related to young children’s experiences of schooling, mathematical play and representations of children and families in research.

The talk has grown out of an ethnographic study following children from Pre-K to first grade, and will tell the stories of students' different experiences in mathematics despite having the same teachers, classmates and curricula. 

The talk will explore the need for research de-centering the experiences of the teachers and seeks to understand the experiences of children who participate in ways that disrupt accepted norms of engagement.
