UW alum Papoi to receive Dissertation Award from AERA Arts & Learning group

UW-Madison alumna Kristin Papoi is receiving the 2017 Dissertation Award from the American Educational Research Association’s Arts & Learning Special Interest Group (SIG).

Papoi’s dissertation research, which was funded by the Morgridge and Barton fellowships, was a multiple site case study that explored the affordances of arts-based pedagogies for elementary aged English learners in Chicago and Los Angeles. Her research provides robust examples of dramatic and visual arts integration pedagogies in action, which are largely missing from the research literature.

Findings from this research suggest how arts-based practices create a valuable, yet often overlooked, pedagogical space that privileges arts sensemaking as both learning and assessment tools.

Papoi received her Ph.D. from the School of Education’s No. 1-ranked Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 2016.

Papoi will receive her award and deliver a short presentation about her dissertation work at the Arts & Learning SIG’s business meeting on Saturday, April 29, in San Antonio, Texas. AERA’s annual meeting runs April 27 to May 1 in San Antonio.

Papoi today is a clinical assistant professor at the University of North Carolina’s School of Education.

Her current research interests explore the impact of arts-based strategies on teacher pedagogical practices to create inquiry-driven, democratic spaces that positively affect learning for emergent bilingual students.
