School of Education entry shines in Lip Sync for Schools fundraiser

November 15, 2016

The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools hosted a Lip Sync for Schools fundraiser on Nov. 4 to celebrate and support local students and educators.

The head-to-head lip sync battle at the Brink Lounge featured choreographed routines, with the audience determining the winner of each clash via applause. This year’s contest featured area principals, teachers and various community leaders including Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham, Madison Police Chief Mike Koval and Mahlon Mitchell, president of the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin.

Lip Sync Team
The School of Education's Lip Sync team included (from
left-to-right) Erica Halverson, Paula McAvoy, Diana Hess,
Marcia Standiford, Simone Schweber and Faisal Abdu'Allah.
In addition, a team from UW-Madison’s School of Education entered this year’s Lip Sync for Schools and performed a snippet from the song “Yorktown” from the musical “Hamilton.” Led by Dean Diana Hess as George Washington, the group from the School of Education also included Professors Erica Halverson (Curriculum and Instruction), Simone Schweber (Curriculum and Instruction) and Faisal Abdu'Allah (Art), in addition to Paula McAvoy, the program director with the Center for Ethics and Education, and School of Education program assistant Marcia Standiford.

Not only did this team's fearless performance garner enough enthusiastic applause to defeat its opponent, but the squad from the School of Education helped contribute nearly $4,000, thanks to its sponsor “Hamelville” (George Hamel, Mike Knetter, and Mark Tauscher) and some generous bidding by Professor Rich Halverson and Hess during the live auction.

In all, approximately $35,000 was raised to directly benefit students and educators in the Madison Metropolitan School District.
