Abdu'Allah, Ladson-Billings to speak at the October Research Showcase

Notable UW-Madison faculty members Faisal Abdu'Allah and Gloria Ladson-Billings will speak at the October Research Showcase, presented by the Wisconsin Union Directorate.

The showcase runs from 7 to 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery - DeLuca Forum. The showcase is free.  Abdu'Allah and Ladson-Billings will each deliver a 30-minute lecture, followed by a panel discussion.

Abdu’Allah is an associate professor of printmaking with the School of Education’s Art Department. He will give a lecture titled, "Mirror To My Thoughts & The Duppy Conquerer."

October Showcase graphicAbdu’Allah is an internationally acclaimed British artist who challenges the values and ideologies we attach to images of power, race, masculinity, violence and faith by invoking the images' historical and cultural contexts in his work. 

Ladson-Billings is the School of Education's Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education and is a professor with the departments of Curriculum and InstructionEducational Policy Studies, and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

She will give a lecture titled, "Facts ... Just the Facts: Restoring Context to Achievement Disparities." â€‹Her research examines the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African American students. She also investigates Critical Race Theory applications to education.
