UW-Madison alum Kvalo named Wisconsin Secondary School Principal of Year

April 29, 2016

UW-Madison alumna Robin Kvalo earlier this month was one of 16 principals across the state selected for a Herb Kohl Leadership Award.

Kvalo, who has served as principal at Portage High School since the 2011-12 school year, was then selected as the 2016 Wisconsin Secondary School Principal of the Year. In this capacity, she will represent Wisconsin in Washington, D.C., in September when the National Principal of the Year is chosen.

Robin Kvalo
Kvalo earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from the School of Education in 1981 and earned a master’s from the School in Educational Administration in 1998.

“We don’t do the job we do in education for the awards, so when you receive one of this caliber, it kind of takes you back a bit,” Kvalo told the Portage Daily Register for an article about the award. “I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of teachers and students getting Herb Kohls, and it’s a tremendous honor.”

This is the first year the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation honored principals for their leadership. The foundation also recognized 100 teachers and 184 graduating high school students, all receiving $3,000.

Kvalo explained to the Daily Register how among her proudest achievements during her time as principal has been the school’s “connection to industry” and bolstering the number of college-level courses at the school. In the report, Kvalo was applauded by colleagues as being a  “visionary” and a “true leader.”
